Ski Helmets

The number of skiers wearing ski helmets is increasing due to the amount of head injuries that occurred in the last season. In total, there were 17,500 head related injuries out of 84,200 injuries in winter sports, with some of the head injuries resulting in death.

Even though it is your decision as to whether or not you wear a ski helmet, it is a good idea to wear one to increase protection should an accident occur. People who are not used to the slopes, such as beginners or young children, should definitely consider wearing a helmet.

Although helmets do not give you 100% protection, it is important that you choose a helmet that fits you properly, as this will increase the effectiveness. Ski helmets must comply with the Common European Norm, the American Society of Testing and Materials and the Snell Memorial Foundation guidelines.

When putting on a ski helmet, it is important to make sure that there are not any gaps between your head and the lining of the helmet. The helmet should sit comfortably on your head, without the back of it coming into contact with your neck. When putting on goggles, make sure that they are a comfortable fit over the helmet. With technology constantly improving, there are now helmets that fit much more comfortably and offer better ventilation, meaning that you are much more likely to want to wear one.

Whilst it is up to the individual as to whether or not a ski helmet should be worn, there are some countries where it is compulsory for children to wear one, such as in Italy, where all children under the age of 14 are required to wear head protection. It is not compulsory in countries such as France, but strongly recommended that children wear a helmet. Children in France who are attending a ski school must wear a helmet. In some resorts, such as ones located in the USA, children must wear a ski helmet if they are attending ski lessons.

If you do decide to opt for a ski helmet, then adult helmets usually cost between £50 and £150. If you wish to purchase a helmet of good quality that comes with a number of features, such as a helmet where you are able to use your radio whilst wearing it, then you should expect to pay more towards £150. If you are buying helmets for your children, then these usually cost between £30 and £70.
